Another idea - the berserkers.

Should be different from both regular troops and ordinary mercenaries IN THAT ONE CAN ONLY HIRE THEM FOR A GIVEN AMOUNT OF TIME.

Like this: "You cannot hire the Berserkers with gold or resources or mercs points - you need the artifact {Artifact Name}. You can only have the Berserkers with your army for {# of hours} and then, if you don't SEND THEM BACK AWAY, they will attack your troops or cities"

Would this make the game harder? It sure would.
Would this make the game yet more interesting? It sure would (IMHO)

Klara2 I once played a great strategy game (not as good as this), but ended up quitting because the game had to many units that all basically did the same thing.

my question is what new thing would a berserker add to the game other than an overpower meatshield?

I suppose the Berserkers would add tension to the game: yes, you can use it BUT you better be careful and quick about using them and then getting rid of them - or they'll attack you!

Like riding a mad dog across a ranch...

Maybe this saying comes from the Lilliputians... or the Pigmeys... (:s8:)
Except I wonder if they ever had ranches...
